PLA-PEG-MAL is an amphiphilic AB diblock copolymer composed of hydrophilic block polyethylene glycol (PEG) and hydrophobic block polylactic acid or polyllactide (PLA). It's functionalized by maleimide. Maleimides may be conjugated with mercaptan to form disulfide bonds. PLA-PEG-MAL is used to prepare core-shell nanoparticles with mercaptan reactive maleimides for conjugation with peptides or proteins with free mercaptan. PEG polymers are terminated by methyl ether groups, and hydrophobic blocks are terminated by hydroxyl groups. Polyethylene glycolated copolymers with biodegradable and biocompatible polyester chain segments can be used to prepare core-shell micelles, nanoparticles and microspheres. PLA-PEG-MAL is a biodegradable polymer micelle used as a carrier for hydrophobic drugs such as paclitaxel.
