Norbornene-PEG-Norbornene is a PEG derivative whose ends of the molecular chain are functionalized by Norbornene. Norbornene binds to linear PEG by an amide bond. By using norbornene at both ends of the molecular chain, it can react rapidly with sulfhydryl groups to prepare hydrogels and other biocompatible materials. These hydrogels are cross-linked through light mediated orthogonal reactions between multi-functional norbornene-modified macromers (e.g., poly(ethylene glycol), hyaluronic acid, gelatin) and sulfhydryl-containing linkers (e.g., dithiothreitol, PEG-dithiol, bis-cysteine peptides, 4-arm PEG-SH and 8-arm PEG-thiol) using low concentration of photoinitiator. Apart from above, it can also be used in nanoparticle modification and many other applications.
