mPEG-PLA is a copolymer of methoxypolyethylene glycol and polylactide. Individual polymers, methoxypolyethylene glycol and polylactide, are used in a variety of medications and are included in the FDA's guidelines for commercially available inactive ingredients. According to the molecular weight of PEG and the ratio of mPEG /PLA, copolymers with different structure and molecular weight can be formed. This kind of copolymer has amphiphilic properties. When micelles are formed in solution, the outer micelles are hydrophilic mPEG chain segment and the core is hydrophobic PLA chain segment. This property of copolymer materials can be used to increase the solubility of some insoluble drugs.
